Grass-fed Beef
Moving to the farm
We had been living in Dublin for 20 years and in 2023 we decided to make the move to Offaly with our 2 children and take over Pauls family farm. In October 2024, we took over the running of the farm from Pauls parents.
Paul is the third generation to farm the land. It was a conventional beef farm finishing cattle for the last number of years. The picture above shows him and his father checking out some of our new cattle in May 2025!
The switch to organic
We had been eating organically for years and healthy nutrient dense food is a big priority for our family so one of our first steps was to convert the farm to organic. We began this as soon as the scheme opened in January 2025. The conversion period is 2 years so we will be fully certified organic in Jan 2027.
We replaced the existing stock on the farm with fully organic cattle that were about 14-16 months old – mainly Angus cattle and 4 Moile cattle. Moile cattle with their distinctive red/white colouring are a native Irish breed that are very good at foraging for food, suited to out-wintering and fatten well on grass.
Grass fed
We fed the cattle on grass only except for the occasional handful of organic feed when we needed some bribery!
Many of the cattle we had had been outwintered before we bought them and we did the same last winter. They were outdoors and were able to come into a shed for silage (fermented grass from the farm) when they wished.
Natural health care
None of the cattle we have now have ever had medication, antibiotics, conventional dosing or vaccines other than the TB test which is mandatory.
When the cattle have needed support – we used homeopathy. We have used this as a family since 2014 and have seen just how powerful it is for all types of illness and injury so it made sense to use it for the cattle. We attended some courses, signed up for an online homeopathy course for animals and got to work putting it into practice! We had amazing results with one heifer that was very lame but recovered very well.
Future plans
Our future plans include fully implementing regenerative practices and implementing KNF (Korean Natural Farming) practices in order to improve beneficial mico-organisms in the soil. We also hope to produce raw dairy.
Direct to consumer meat sale
Our aim is to produce nutrient dense food and provide it directly to customers – which cuts out the middleman and means that customers get a much higher quality product for a lower price. As we don’t have a farm shop (yet!) we will be selling the meat in bulk – a quarter or a side of beef or for those with the freezer space a full animal. Find out more.
